A Moment of Summer in Oslo

Like little bursts of buttered sunshine, the Oslo ferries glide across the bay. Their color makes me smile. You would expect a ferry to be red, not yellow. But this public ferry system has become a hallmark of summer for the local people, who reminisce about riding it in their childhood.

Everywhere we looked, vibrantly-chalked signs called out to us with messages like “Good Vibes,” ushering us into wharf-side restaurants. Choosing one somewhat randomly, we perched at a high-top table right at the water’s edge and ordered wine, Fish Soup (which Norway does very well!) and French fries. Soft waves lapped at the concrete beneath our feet.
