The Art of Learning to Appreciate Hard Times and Circumstances in the Here and Now

Have you ever gone through something awful? Most of us have, at one point in our lives. It not only comes with the territory, sometimes it’s the territory itself that presents us with hardships. It’d be super alpha of me to tell you to “suck it up” or “man up” and endure it. While it’s true, there are times that’s literally all we’ll be able to do (short of needlessly complaining, anyway), my challenge to you is to take it a step further and learn to dig even deeper.

Don’t just endure the suck you’re going through, when you’re going through it — embrace it. Learn to love it and not leave home without it.

Put your so called hard times, through harder times by taking inventory of how many just like them or worse you’ve survived throughout your life. My guess is, it’s all of them. You made it through then — and it’s likely you will again. If we could only come to this realization in a more timely fashion, cardiac events and suicide rates would likely drop drastically — especially here in the United States where we have it better than 99% of the global population — yet somehow report being more depressed, stressed and unhappy than a large portion of them as well.

The only logical explanation behind this ass backwards stat, is to presume perhaps the rest of the world expects terrible things to happen. In a way, they’ve grown quite accustomed to the suck, so to speak.

Meanwhile, here in America — we’re losing our collective cool over which statues of historical figures we should or shouldn’t be taking down. We’re teaching our youth how to avoid “becoming triggered in their safe spaces”. I don’t know when it happened exactly — but we’ve grown downright soft.

We have no perseverance or persistence in the face of real adversity.

Mainly, because we don’t face it nearly early or often enough to where doing so becomes second nature to us, like it long ago did to much of the rest of the world. While others with less resources, aid and shelter were embracing whatever life, nature or a ruthless dictator threw at them — we were in search of higher ground. We need to be more willing to fight, than we are to take flight, out of fear of facing conflict, pain and struggle.
