Why Is Nobody Talking About This?

Perhaps it is a sense of disappointment at what it truly means to live in the “real world”; a slow adjustment to the status quo that everyone must go through at some point in their lives. Perhaps we…

Counselor Connect

The second half of the Aaina System

Using our learnings from our conversation with Elizabeth, we started to build the second half of our system which was the application that will be used by the in-person therapist. We envisioned this application to function as a platform which would take all of the data collected by the mobile application ‘Aaina’, and provide this collected data to the therapist for them to interpret, draw conclusions and prescribe prognosis.

Currently, how a patient-therapist system works is only conversation, which unfortunately is a more one-way flow of information than we’d like. Our idea of modifying this system was to change it from a linear to a cyclical flow of information. Here, comes the combination of 2 applications-Aaina and Counselor Connect. The user only interacts with Aaina, and the therapist with Counselor Connect exclusively. Together, these 2 applications solve some problems both users face-the therapist is unable to track in detail the user’s journey as the focus during the session is towards listening to the patient and taking basic notes rather than analysing their behaviour and comparing it to previous sessions. The user too often wishes for a tangible action plan they can adhere to after their therapy sessions for better and faster results.

The user talks to Aaina, as if with an actual therapist over a period of many weeks. Aaina tracks these conversations and creates trends. This data is sent to the in person therapist via the Counselor Connect, who makes sense of this data to create an action plan for the user. This action plan is in turn sent to Aaina, who makes sure it is followed through between the in person therapy sessions. Thus, making this a cyclic process.

The therapist’s dashboard

When the therapist logs into the system, they have the ability to view their sheduled appointments for the week. They can view details such as patients name, time of appointment and whether they have checked in. The therapist can also quickly glance through the patient’s basic history like a summary of the condition and last appointment date, by selecting a patricular patient. The therapist has the option to directly start a session from this page or view a detailed history of the patient.

The user ‘s (Sarah) profile

Our conversation with Elizabeth revealed that Aaina will be of significant help to any therapist if ‘she’ could collect all basic information such as personal history, education, contact details and criminal history; which otherwise takes too long to record in person. All of this information can be accessed by the therapist in the patient’s profile page on Counselor Connect.

Once the therapist starts the session, she is provided with all the information collected by Aaina until then. This information, as previously described, is divided into 4 sections — Physical, Emotional, Behavioural and Mental.

At the start of each session, the therapist and the user create a set of goals that they wish to accomplish.

For the purpose of this project, we explored the Emotion Recognition flow in depth. We wanted to create this entire flow like an onion, where the therapist ‘peels layers’ to view more detailed information.

On the first screen, the therapist views an overall summary of the user’s emotions across sessions. The therapist can also select the particular sessions she wishes to view information about.

The 5 emotions we choose to map are Anger, Joy, Fear, Sadness and Disgust, using multiple colors.

The therapist then clicks on the chart to view detailed information for each session. Here, she sees a breakdown of each emotion, and the specific keywords in the transcript that caused Aaina to flag a particular emotion. The therapist also has the ability to scrub through the session to view different keywords. By swiping side to side, she can toggle between sessions.

If the therapist wishes, she can click on ‘view transcript’ to view the entire conversation between Aaina and the user.

At the end of a session, the therapist takes all of the goals they created together and converts them to tasks or action plans. The patient is notified when this plan is sent to Aaina, who helps the user follow the plan between sessions.

Throughout the session, the therapist is able to take notes, just like they would in a conventional therapy session. They can either use a stylus or type in the interface.

At any point in time, the therapist can click on the hamburger menu to view other actions.
