Happy boatman

There lived a happy boatman who was very happy. He was a very wise man, probably the wisest. Most definitive proof of his wisdom is that he keeps his counsel to himself. He never offers unsolicited advice. Yet he couldn’t keep his mouth shut this time.

He gave up a busy city job to find true happiness – it was to ferry people from one shore to the other shore. He loves the morning breeze, the sun and the torrent rains. His mind is busy reading people without interfering. People forget that he is around – and speak their mind… he has a calming, almost invisible presence

One day a troubled young person boarded the boat with his friend. Boatman sensed great confusion in his mind – it was visible in the way the guy stumbled to his seat.

Animatedly, he was talking to his friend – and they forgot the boatman’s presence and were speaking loudly about a woman, his crush. The boy was troubled, puzzled by her behavior…

“I cried in her arms – and she sounded happy. I am puzzled” . Boatman was intrigued, thought she must be really strong to celebrate and encourage expression of vulnerability. Hope he realises how lucky he is.. so the boatman thought.

He learnt that the woman spends lot of time doing yoga, dance and other activities to stay active and fit. He couldn’t stop his smile when the boy talked about how he got lectured into buying moisturiser. There goes a woman who is unapologetic to prioritise self, and in doing so, gives other permission to prioritise themselves… he was more than intrigued.

The boy talked about her many , many friends and nick names she has got over the years. Boatman could sense a bit of possessiveness when he talked about other taller guys in her life. What impressed him the most was to hear about the fact that she maintains a routine to take out time for everyone. There goes a woman who knows how to manage the relationships – he thought

Then he heard about her past and how she built her life brick-by-brick. By now – in his mind, she was either the Wonder Woman (or punjabi matriarch ;))… he was desperate to meet her.

Alas – they reached the destination.. and the journey had to end.

Another day- on a rainy day.. there boarded a beautiful woman in her 20s.

She had this confident look and demeanour. It was clear that she was quite active and had lived a rich life so far. Yet – the boatman was stuck by her eyes.

Her eyes revealed everything – it was hauntingly beautiful, but hiding the sadness

When she was about to leave – boatman felt very sad. He fought back the urge to stay silent. He then saw the tentative boy waiting for her to pick her up. He silently whispered with his eyes to her – don’t settle. You deserve everything.
