Succeeding in your first junior developer position

While it’s one thing to network and maintain an up-to-date LinkedIn profile, if you’re seeking your next opportunity, taking a relaxed position and expecting that next break to fall in your lap may not be the best approach. There are a lot of things to consider when it comes to this, and sometimes it has to be handled with care. Does your employer know you’re looking for other opportunities? What does your position entail with your current company? Will you be able to use any of the work you’ve done as points of reference to validate your experience with company X? These are things to consider, and if you signed an NDA, the last question may be an outright “No.” Understand what you’re getting into and be prepared to answer questions if they arise, either by the potential new employer, or the current one.

It’s important to maintain a healthy balance of in-office time with out-of-office time. You need to be maintaining some personal projects that are truly enjoyable and enable you to refine your skills, have time to socialize and enjoy the life you’re building. If you spend your waking hours confined to an office with two screens staring back at you, you aren’t going to have the time to properly decompress, and eventually, the stress will bleed over into the quality of work you’re producing. After enough time of this going on, your passion will begin to be smothered and you’ll question if this entire thing is even for you anymore. Prevent this by making sure you give yourself time to disconnect, get away from code, and screens, and clients. Find quality outlets for the pressure you’re under — make art, go camping, climb mountains, or jump out of airplanes. Do something, anything, that doesn’t require you to do what you spend a majority of your week doing.
