The Elegant and Tasteful Dichotomy That is Manila

The burgeoning business districts and urban developments within the Metro Manila flaunts the Western influence that the city has succumbed to – blurring the distinct heritage and identity of the population. Amidst the radical transformation of the cities in Metro Manila, the country’s capital, Manila, is a testament of the rich culture and history of the Philippines. It is where one revisits the golden ages or cultural renaissance of the Philippines.

Manila holds the country’s medieval treasures, citing the enduring charm of the winding streets of the ancient times as well as some modern additions. The city is a perfect blend and balance of the old and the new which makes it the once-but-still gleaming capital of the Philippines. Several timeless structures would speak narratives of the history of the metropolis. Ermita is one of the few areas in the city of Manila which boasts architectural models that withstood the test of time. This is where the iconic Manila Metropolitan Theater is situated, the theater which once seated thousands of spectators and showcased the grandest 20th century productions from operas to concerts and plays. Another prime cultural institution in Manila is the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). These are venues which fostered the generation’s appreciation for the arts which is still the evident and noticeable emblem in its façade. Not only do these structures stand as symbols of authentic Filipino resilience, but are also considered centerpieces of the urbanized and civilized spirit of the city.

The inner workings of the city of Manila would also reveal rich and diverse gastronomical delights, such as in Binondo, which can satisfy the taste palettes of tourists and locals alike. The streets of Binondo are swarmed with eateries, restaurants and carinderias which brandishes both signature Filipino and Chinese dishes. Binondo is the place to be if you are in search of the classic Filipino favorite, Adobo or simply want to indulge in some dumplings, spring rolls and Peking Roasted Duck.

Despite the highly urbanized and commercialized spaces in Metro Manila that ushered in the cultural descent of the cities, the dichotomy between modernity and antiquity is embodied in the city of Manila. And indeed, nothing quite captures the heritage and establishes the national identity of the country than this city, Manila.
