Knowing local customs and etiquette can help you avoid potential misunderstandings or conflicts. Speaking in an elevated tone or just being downright loud, may be seen as offensive in some countries, or leaving a tip might not be the custom in the country. Educate yourself before you go so you can fit in a little more!
2. Learn some of the languages of the country you visit.
Even if you don’t become fluent, knowing some of the languages of the place you visit will help you better connect with the locals. knowing how to say Thank you, hello, and goodbye and where is my hotel are important things to learn for a start.
3. Be aware of the local laws
Let Brittany Griner's heartbreaking and politically ridden detainment in Russia be a cautionary tale. Even if something is legal where you are from, it could be illegal in the country you are visiting. Make sure you take the time to learn the laws and regulations of the country you are visiting.
4. Make copies of all essential documents
Make sure to bring copies of your passport, driver’s license, and other important documents in case they get lost or stolen. Upload the documents not only on your phone but on Google Drive, and email them to your emergency contact as well. I would also have a hard copy with you and kept in a secure place.
5. Make sure to have health insurance.
International medical care can be expensive, so make sure you have the right insurance to cover any medical expenses you may incur. I recommend having travel insurance as a backup or if your insurance does not cover you in other countries its an inexpensive coverage to have to cost less than $100 for a week trip!
