Those Living in Hurricane Alley Should Use Social Media Wisely

On September 1st, 2019, President Donald Trump gave a hurricane warning to South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and even Alabama.

According to this tweet, Hurricane Dorian would affect the state of Alabama. However, the Birmingham, Alabama, branch of the National Weather Service clarified just hours after the initial tweet from President Trump.

After the tweet from President Trump, panic spread throughout eastern Alabama. Also, some Alabamians prepared to evacuate the area in order to avoid the hazard, even though the NWS claimed Alabama will not see any impact from hurricane Dorian. Clearly, the confusing information already did its damage thanks to social media.

People argue that the internet is a nasty place. If that’s true, then social media might be the worst. Bad actors may falsify news to make others panic, or maybe they just think it’s funny.

All of the topics listed above help one become better prepared for the hurricane season. Please be careful and don’t trust falsified news, don’t take jokes too seriously, and check official accounts for natural hazard information. Following these guidelines can help you remain safe while living in hurricane valley.
