Saul Bass is known for his iconic film posters he created while working with some of Hollywood’s most well known directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and Martin Scorsese.
Growing up in New York, he studied part time at the Art Students League in Manhattan, before working in Hollywood in 1940’s.
He started by designing print advertisements for films before being asked to design a poster by director Carmen Preminger. Preminger was so impressed he hired him to produce the title sequence as well. It was at this point Bass realized just how valuable the title sequence could be in establishing a movie.
He went onto work on both poster and title sequences, becoming legendary for his work on both.
He is most well known for his designs for Vertigo, The Shining, Anatomy of a Murder, The Man with the Golden Arm, and Schindler’s List.
