Why guys should knit.

I learned to crochet when I was seven.

My Nana would do this and I ,being more of an indoor kid, wanted some new indoor activity I could do besides read.

“Stand here and watch what I do.”I did, and it became a lifelong habit.

My mother had the start of a knit scarf. “How do you do that?” I asked.And I started another lifelong Habit.

But sadly, guys who knit are a rare breed, and I never understood why.

Knitting takes forethought, planning, an understanding of engineering, patience, and you can do it and drink beer at the same time. Knitting was at onetime a male-dominated field. Fishermen knit on their boats. Soldiers knit in foxholes. Somewhere in the fuzzy edges of history we began to put things in tight little gender boxes and nailed the lids shut. While We struggle to become more enlightened people, some lids are just never taken off.

To be honest, I was teased a lot because of my hobby as a kid. Both my peers and other adults never saw the value of being able to create things with string. Yet it never stopped me. Christmas gifts, birthday presents, donations to charity all came from this ability to take two sticks, or a hook and twist yarn into something else. The people you meet when you do knit , or crochet, are amazing. Wonderful kind people who love that you, like them, can decipher a secret language of yarn.

You meet really cool people..guys who knit are rare and wonderful and always stand out… straight guys who knit really shine…

You keep your hands busy while binge watching shows. Instead of snacking, you get to keep your hands doing something else and out of the chip bag.

It eases your mind. After a busy day at work worrying about meetings, phone calls, budgets, bosses, coworkers and projects, there is something to be said for one single minded activity that requires all your concentration.

It's a fun challenge. Patterns are written in a shorthanded lingo that you need to learn.There are elements of gauge, measurement, construction, and chart reading. Some projects take months of dedication, persistence and careful and detailed working methods.

It gives your senses a workout. We focus on working out the body and the mind, but we rarely get to give our sensorial pallet a workout. Men are rarely allowed to express admiration for texture or color. Yarn allows you to experience texture, color, scale in a way you never thought of. Planning projects and selecting yarn is more enjoyable that you would imagine.

Its sexy. A man that is confident and creative is sexy to both genders.

I am not saying it's for every guy, but I challenge any man to take away the “its for girls thought” and give it a try , is more challenging, and enjoyable that you will ever imagine.
