On Friendship
I believe everyone has given some thought to the kind of friends we want to have and the friends we have now. We grasp the importance of friendship, but we often struggle to articulate what is it that we treasure so much about friendship.
We desire companionship when we are down. We want to have friends to rejoice with during the mountaintops of life. We also want to have friends who are somewhat like us, who share similar interests or outlooks or values or who even dislike the same things that we do (truth be told that is sometimes a huge determinant of who we let be our friends). Then in our more sober moments, we want friends who bring out the good in us. Friends who live out values that we admire and one day hope to achieve. Friends who dare to dream and throw themselves out there again regardless, while we watch silently on the sides, wishing if only we could be so brave.
In our weak moments, when a great many things have fallen apart, we wish for friends who would be there for us, just silently present and understanding. Ever nonjudgmental: “true, true, that could have happened to anyone.” Because deep down, we all know it could. But then we also wish for friends who would call us out in our moments of cowardice and folly, in a show of strong love, to shake off our stupor and snap out of it. To hold us to higher standards than those we have fallen to, because the friend they once knew could. To demand better of us, when it is so easy to sympathise with weakness.
It is a wonderful thing to find all 4 friends in one person. But otherwise, it is nothing less to find them in a multitude of people.
