The Gilded Age

And something to reflect on the story

One of the most interesting stories in The Gilded Age is not about the new rich struggle for power. It is not about the fight for status between the old and the new money elite represented by the van Rhijns and the Russels families. It is about a young woman.

The main story of The Gilded Age is about the poor new magnates who used their money and power in the New York society pictured in the series. I may talk about this in another post.

As we saw on Downton Abbey, the famous series from the same creator, Julian Fellowes, the parallel dramas in the series are always interesting. They give us philosophical elements to think about. This is one of the reasons that the show was so popular.

Downton Abbey showed the emotions of human beings such as love, friendship, hope, fear, courage, envy, madness, power, and so on. There was always one or other situation in which we would have some affinity. Yet, the show was about a world of white people. Only. This is now corrected in the new show.

This character of The Gilded Age represents progress in the author's approach. She is interesting because her story presents situations that we somehow connect with. The story brings us a series of possibilities for reflection. On life, and ourselves.

I am talking about Peggy Scott, interpreted by the actress Denée Benton. She is a young black woman who is trying to succeed as a writer in the late 19th-century. Can you imagine?

Meanwhile, she conflicts with her conservative father, who disapproves of her choice for a living as a writer. At the end of Season 1, they brought up another interesting element of her story. If developed in the next Season, it will grow this character to one of the most important in the show. I will avoid the spoiler.

That’s the reason this character is so rich. Even though she does not represent a true person in history, her story opens a series of relevant topics to think about. And that’s what art is about. Romances, stories, poetry, paintings, sculptures, plays, movies. Art is not about entertainment. It is about inviting us to reflect on life. This is when I recognize a work as a work of art: when it makes me think about life.

Peggy Scott dialogues with our struggles, doubts, fears, and beliefs. Here is how this character connects with us:

The final episode of The Gilded Age, Season 1, aired on March 21. I hope they keep Peggy Scott in the next Season. She is a gift to all of us who appreciate good stories.

Thanks for reading. What are your thoughts about it?
