The Old Man and the Boy

The scarf was wound too tight around the old man’s throat. He tugged and loosened it until a comfortable gap opened at the nape of his throat. Then, he knocked on the door. He watched his breath push…

A Revolution is Brewing

A revolution is brewing. The media is changing the dynamics of U.S politics and society in 2018. They have a responsibility to the American public to inform and enlighten. However, it seems that much of the News Media would now rather host partisan screaming matches instead of thoughtful political discourse, in their efforts to boost ratings.

News organizations have always been at the center of one storm or another. They are no strangers to controversy. However, this year has proved contentious for escalated rhetoric and actions by the news media. Of course, the usual suspects come to mind. Fox, CNN, and MSNBC to name a few are all guilty of using strong language and loud voices instead of fostering truly educated discussion. This false, biased, or altered information (or rather misinformation) then makes its way to the millions of Americans who waste no time to use it as ammunition against their opponents on the other side of the aisle. This rhetoric is blasted all over the echo chamber that is social media without any proper verification. It even manages to rear its ugly face in our president’s daily tweets. This rhetoric is often just plain offensive and distasteful. For example, in the aftermath of the Parkland shootings, the teenage activists were met with petty personal attacks from Fox News Host Laura Ingraham. Rather than apologize to the survivor, the once “Fair and Balanced” Fox news defended Ingraham’s comments. At the same time, images of Parkland survivor David Hogg’s face with a shooting target circulated through social media. This behavior is not confined to just Fox, however.

It is important to note bias is not inherently negative. It is to a certain degree is inevitable and can even be positive. The public’s opinions and concerns should be openly shared and available for all people to react and respond to. Thoughtful civil discussion is one of the strongest remedies to our current socio-political tension. However, the keyword is “thoughtful”. There are ways to make strong and impassioned statements without resorting to insolent tantrums. In an ideal world, the left would not hurl vulgar language at the President’s wife and children, and the right would no longer go to ridiculous lengths to defend some of his objectively bizarre actions. Not only are these tactics ineffective but cheapen and delegitimize the arguments being made. We are better than this.
